- Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER R & IΒ under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check for battery voltage at cavity "J" of instrument cluster Gray 11-pin connector. See Fig 1 . Turn ignition on. Check for ignition/battery voltage at cavity "K" of instrument cluster Gray 11-pin connector. If battery voltage is not present at both locations, repair wiring as necessary.
- If battery voltage is present, check cavity "F" of the instrument cluster Red connector for continuity to vehicle ground. See Fig 1
. If continuity is not present, repair wiring as necessary. If continuity is present, check for tachometer signal by connecting an AC digital voltmeter to ground and to cavity "H" of instrument cluster Gray connector.NOTE: Engine controller (SBEC) is located in engine compartment, near battery, and contains a 60-pin connector. See Figure .
- Voltage reading should be a minimum of one volt with engine running. If voltage is correct, go to step 5). If voltage is less than one volt, check wire for continuity between cavity "H" of instrument cluster Gray connector and pin No. 43 of engine controller (SBEC) connector. See Figure and Fig 1 .
- If continuity is not present, repair wiring as necessary. Ensure engine controller (SBEC) and its connector do not have damaged pins or poor connections. If continuity is present between cavity "H" and pin No. 43 of engine controller, replace engine controller (SBEC).
- If all tests performed are good and tachometer is still inoperative, replace tachometer drive module. Tachometer drive module is attached to printed circuit board on rear of instrument cluster. If tachometer still remains inoperable, replace tachometer assembly.

- β’ The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
- β’ You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
- β’ You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
