WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Vibe. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Install scan tool and check for DTCs. Is a DTC P0450 or P0451 present? If yes, go to DTC P0450: FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR CIRCUIT or DTC P0451: FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR PERFORMANCE . If no, go to next step.
- Review freeze frame/failure records. Diagnose DTC captured in freeze frame/failure records first. Is DTC P0441 captured in freeze frame/failure records? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
- Using scan tool, command EVAP purge solenoid ON and OFF. Do you hear or feel a click as EVAP purge solenoid is commanded ON and OFF? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 10.
- Remove purge line from EVAP purge solenoid. Connect a vacuum gauge to EVAP purge solenoid purge port. Start engine. Does vacuum gauge indicate a vacuum being applied? If yes, go to step 18. If no, go to next step.
- With engine running, command purge valve ON (open). Does vacuum gauge indicate a vacuum being applied? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 17.
- Reinstall EVAP purge line to purge solenoid. Remove fuel fill cap to release any pressure inside fuel tank. Reinstall fuel fill cap. Turn ignition switch to RUN position, engine OFF. Observe FTP sensor parameter on scan tool. Is FTP sensor 0.0-0.5 in. H2O? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 15.
- Start engine. Select EVAP PURGE/SEAL function on scan tool. See SERVICE BAY TESTS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Command EVAP Purge/Seal function ON. Does FTP sensor indicate a reading of -12.50 in. H2O for as long as 2 minutes?
- Repeat EVAP Purge/Seal test exactly as detailed below. Command EVAP PURGE/SEAL function ON. Monitor FTP sensor with scan tool for -12.50 in. H2O for the duration of the test. Continue to observe FTP sensor for 30 seconds after PURGE/SEAL test is complete. Did FTP sensor indicate that vacuum dropped to less than -10.00 in. H2O in the 30 seconds after the test was complete? IF yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If no go to DTC P0446: EVAP VENT SYSTEM PERFORMANCE .
- Disconnect EVAP purge solenoid. Turn ignition switch to RUN position, engine OFF. Connect test light between EVAP purge solenoid ignition positive voltage circuit and a known-good ground. Does test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 13.
- Connect test light between EVAP purge solenoid ignition positive voltage circuit and EVAP purge solenoid control circuit. Using scan tool, command EVAP purge solenoid ON. Does test light illuminate when EVAP purge solenoid is commanded ON, and turn OFF when EVAP purge solenoid is commanded OFF? If yes, go to step 14. If no, go to next step.
- Check EVAP purge solenoid control circuit for an open, short to voltage, or short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 21. If no, go to step 16.
- Repair open or short to ground in EVAP purge solenoid ignition positive voltage circuit. Replace fuse as necessary. After repair, go to step 21.
- Check EVAP canister purge solenoid for an intermittent and for a poor connection. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 21.
- Check FTP sensor for an intermittent and for a poor connection. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 21. If no, go to step 19.
- Check PCM connectors for an intermittent and for a poor connection. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 21. If no, go to step 20.
- Check EVAP purge solenoid vacuum supply for a blockage or restriction. Did you find and correct the problem? If yes, go to step 21. If no, go to next step.
- Replace EVAP purge solenoid. After repair, go to step 21.
- Replace FTP sensor. After repair, go to step 21.
- Replace PCM. After repair, go to next step.
If yes, go to step 23. If no, go to next step.
- The EVAP System failed EVAP PURGE/SEAL test. Is there an EVAP system DTC that has not been diagnosed? If yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, go to step 4.
- Observe the CAPTURE INFO using scan tool. Are there any DTCs that have not been diagnosed? If yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay at this time.
