The pedestrian impact detection system (PIDS) senses and discriminates vehicle impacts and deploy the pedestrian hood hinge actuators in a timely manner to protect vulnerable pedestrians. The safing sensor provides vehicle acceleration information to the pedestrian impact detection system (PIDS) module. The PIDS module uses vehicle acceleration information from the safing sensor and force information from the discrimination sensor to determine those events when the deployment of the hood hinge actuator is expected. The PIDS module provides a two wire current loop interface to the safing sensor. The PIDS module also provides power and ground to the safing sensor over the same two wire discrete interface. The PIDS module monitors the safing sensor for any system malfunction and when a malfunction is detected, a DTC will be stored in non volatile memory.
