IMPORTANT:
Observe and accurately mark the positions of all driveline components relative to the propeller shaft and axles prior to disassembly. These components include the propeller shaft, drive axles, pinion flanges, output shafts, etc. Reassemble all components in the exact relationship the components had to each other during removal. Follow specifications and torque values. Follow any measurements made prior to disassembly.
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
- Place jack or utility stands (such as GMDE 123-1367313) at the front end of the vehicle.
- Support the rear axle with jack or utility stands.
- Remove the wheel and tire assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires And Wheels.
- For vehicles with RPO JL4, disconnect the electrical connector from the rear wheel speed sensor.
- Remove the brake calipers from the rear axle. It is not necessary to disconnect the brake hose from the caliper. Support the brake calipers as necessary and set aside. Refer to Brake Caliper Replacement - Rear in Disc Brakes.
- Disconnect the propeller shaft from the rear axle. Support the propeller shaft as necessary and set aside. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement - One Piece or Propeller Shaft Replacement - Two Piece in Propeller Shaft.
- Disconnect the park brake cables. Refer to Park Brake Cable Replacement - Left Rear and Park Brake Cable Replacement - Right Rear in Park Brake.
- Drain the lubricant from rear axle. Refer to Lubricant Replacement - Rear Drive Axle (8.6 Inch Axle)Β or Lubricant Replacement - Rear Drive Axle (9.75 Inch, 10.5 Inch Axles)Β .
- Remove the rear axle vent hose from the axle.
- Disconnect the lower portion of the shock absorber from the rear axle. Refer to Shock Absorber Replacement in Rear Suspension.
- Remove the rear spring U-bolts, the rear spring anchor plates and the rear spring spacers from the vehicle. Refer to Leaf Spring Replacement in Rear Suspension.
- Remove the rear axle from the vehicle.
