Removal & Installation: Transaxle: Removal

- Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
- Disconnect the air inlet duct hose from the intake plenum.
- Install the appropriate engine support fixture.
- Disconnect the transaxle wiring harness from the transaxle and the PNP switch.
- Remove the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts and stud. See Fig 1 .
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies.
- Remove the left front fender liner.
- Remove the front frame assembly.
- Remove the 2 bolts from the transaxle brace. See Fig 2 .
- Disconnect the shift cable from the shift linkage. See Fig 3 .
- Disconnect the shift cable from the bracket.
- Remove the flywheel inspection cover. See Fig 4 .
- Remove the starter. See appropriate STARTERS article in ELECTRICAL.
- Mark the relationship of the flywheel to the torque converter for reassembly.
- Remove the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts. See Fig 5 .
- Remove the transaxle cooler lines by removing the nut holding the bracket to the transaxle case.
- Disconnect the VSS wiring harness from the sensor.
- Disconnect the wheel drive shafts from the transaxle. See appropriate AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the body-to-transaxle mount bolts.
- Lower the transaxle with the engine support fixture enough to remove the transaxle.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Support the transaxle with a suitable jack.
- Remove the transaxle to engine nut. See Fig 1 .
- Separate the engine and the transaxle.
- Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
- Remove the PNP switch.
- Remove the shifter cable bracket.
- Remove the lower transaxle-to-engine stud.
- Remove the transaxle mount.
- Flush the transaxle cooler and the lines with appropriate flushing equipment, whenever the transaxle has been removed for overhaul or replacement.
