Steering Column (Cavalier & SUNFIRE): Installation
2002 Chevrolet Cavalier Base, 4D Sedan, 2.4 TSECTION Installation
CAUTION:
In order to ensure intended function of steering column during a crash and in order to avoid personal injury to driver, ensure following are performed: Tighten steering column lower fasteners before tightening steering column upper fasteners. Failure to do this can damage steering column. Tighten steering column fasteners to specified torque. Overtightening upper steering column fasteners could affect steering column collapse.
- Install steering column (3) to vehicle. See Fig 3 .
- Tighten lower mounting bolts (4) to steering column (3). Tighten lower mounting bolts to 20 ft lbs. (27 N.m).
- Install upper mounting bolts (1) to steering column (3). Tighten mounting bolts to 20 ft lbs. (27 N.m).
- Connect electrical connectors to steering column (3).
- Install intermediate steering shaft upper pinch bolt (5) to steering column.
- Install steering column trim covers.
- Install steering wheel.
- Enable air bag system. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. For 2002, see AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Article.
- Connect negative battery cable.
