30-Minute Relearn Procedure
Use this procedure after replacing any of these components: Pass-Key(R) III keys, theft deterrent control module or PCM.
If replacing a theft deterrent control module with a GM SPO replacement part, perform setup procedure for new theft deterrent control module prior to 30-minute relearn procedure.
- Using Black master Pass-Key(R) III key, turn ignition switch to RUN position.
- Observe SECURITY indicator. After about 10 minutes SECURITY indicator will turn off.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position, and wait 5 seconds.
- Repeat steps 1 - 3 for 2 more times, for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes.
- Using Black master Pass-Key(R) III key, start vehicle. Vehicle has learned key transponder information, and PCM has learned fuel continue password.
- Using scan tool, clear any DTCs.

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:
- • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
- • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
- • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
- • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
- • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
