Telescoping Steering Column Inoperative

2001 Chevrolet Cavalier LS, 2.4 TSECTION Telescoping Steering Column Inoperative
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Chevrolet Corvette. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If telescoping column system check has been performed, go to next step. If telescoping column system check has not been performed, see TELESCOPING COLUMN SYSTEM CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  2. Using scan tool, select Seat Control Module (SCM) input display. Select and monitor telescoping steering column FORE/AFT switch status. Operate telescoping actuator switch fore and aft. If FORE/AFT switch status displays ACTIVE and INACTIVE in relation to switch operation, go to step  9 . If switch status is not in relation to switch position, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect telescoping actuator switch harness connector C208. Using a DVOM, measure continuity of telescoping actuator switch. Between C208 terminals "A" (Pink wire) and "C" (Purple wire), while in forward position. Between C208 terminals "A" (Pink wire) and "B" (Orange wire), while in aft position. If continuity exists in both switch positions, go to next step. If continuity does not exist in either switch positions, go to step  6 .
  4. Disconnect Seat Control Module (SCM) 26-pin connector C1. Check continuity of Pink wire between SCM connector C1 terminal No. 14 and terminal "A" of C208 (harness side). Also, check continuity of Orange wire between SCM connector C1 terminal No. 11 and terminal "B" of C208 (harness side). If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, go to step  7 .
  5. Check for continuity to ground in Black wire at telescoping actuator switch connector C208 (harness side). If continuity exists, go to step  18 . If continuity does not exist, go to step  8 .
  6. Replace telescoping actuator switch. See TELESCOPING ACTUATOR SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Perform telescoping column system check. See TELESCOPING COLUMN SYSTEM CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  7. Repair open or high resistance in affected circuit. Perform telescoping column system check. See TELESCOPING COLUMN SYSTEM CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  8. Repair open in Black wire. Perform telescoping column system check. See TELESCOPING COLUMN SYSTEM CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  9. Ensure adjuster motor soft stop is not limiting the adjustment range. Press the telescoping actuator switch 6 consecutive times in both directions. If steering column fore and aft adjustment is now functional, go to telescoping column system check. See TELESCOPING COLUMN SYSTEM CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If fore and aft adjustment is not functional, go to next step.
  10. Disconnect drive cable from telescoping actuator. Inspect cable for breakage or binding condition. If cable is in working condition, go to next step. If cable is working properly.
  11. While observing mechanical operation of cable, operate telescoping actuator switch aft and forward. If cable drives in both directions, go to step  16 . If cable does not drive in both directions, go to next step.
  12. Disconnect steering column actuator drive motor connector C210. Connect a test light between harness connector terminals of C210. Operate telescoping switch fore and aft. If test light illuminates when drive motor operation is requested, go to step  14 . If test light does not illuminate for either switch position, go to next step.
  13. Disconnect Seat Control Module (SCM). Using a DVOM, measure resistance of Red wire between drive motor connector C210 and SCM Light Green connector C2. Also, measure resistance of Black wire between C210 and SCM Black connector C3 terminal "D". If continuity does not exist in either circuit, go to step  17 . If continuity exists, go to step  18 .
  14. Replace telescoping steering column actuator drive motor. See TELESCOPING ACTUATOR DRIVE MOTOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Preform telescoping column system check. See TELESCOPING COLUMN SYSTEM CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  15. Replace telescoping steering column adjuster cable. Preform telescoping column system check. See TELESCOPING COLUMN SYSTEM CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  16. Replace telescoping steering column actuator. See TELESCOPING ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Preform telescoping column system check. See TELESCOPING COLUMN SYSTEM CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  17. Repair open or high resistance in appropriate circuit as necessary. Preform telescoping column system check. See TELESCOPING COLUMN SYSTEM CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  18. Replace Seat Control Module (SCM). See POWER SEATS - CORVETTE article. Preform telescoping column system check. See TELESCOPING COLUMN SYSTEM CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
