- Test the fuel injectors. Go to FUEL INJECTOR BALANCE TEST WITH SPECIAL TOOL , FUEL INJECTOR BALANCE TEST WITH TECH 2 , or FUEL INJECTOR COIL TEST under FUEL SYSTEMS (GASOLINE) in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - 2.2L ALERO, CAVALIER, GRAND AM & SUNFIRE article.
- Check for a restricted fuel filter. Go to FUEL SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS (GASOLINE) under FUEL SYSTEMS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - 2.2L ALERO, CAVALIER, GRAND AM & SUNFIRE article.
- Test for incorrect fuel pressure. Go to FUEL PRESSURE TEST under FUEL SYSTEMS (GASOLINE) in BASIC DIAGNOSTICS PROCEDURES - 2.2L ALERO, CAVALIER, GRAND AM & SUNFIRE article.
- Check for fuel in the fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose. If fuel is found in the hose replace the fuel pressure regulator.
- Check for a contaminated fuel condition. Go to ALCOHOL/CONTAMINANTS-IN-FUEL DIAGNOSIS WITH SPECIAL TOOL or ALCOHOL/CONTAMINANTS-IN-FUEL DIAGNOSIS WITHOUT SPECIAL TOOL under FUEL SYSTEMS (GASOLINE) in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - 2.2L ALERO, CAVALIER, GRAND AM & SUNFIRE article.
- Check for the following conditions that may cause the engine to run rich:
- Any water intrusion in the HO2S connector.
- The engine oil contaminated by fuel.
- An EVAP canister purge condition.
- Incorrect fuel pressure. Go to FUEL PRESSURE TEST under FUEL SYSTEMS (GASOLINE) in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - 2.2L ALERO, CAVALIER, GRAND AM & SUNFIRE article.
- A leaking fuel pressure regulator.
- Any leaking fuel injectors.
- Any vacuum hoses that are split, kinked, or improperly connected.
- An air intake duct that is collapsed or restricted.
- An air filter that is dirty or restricted.
- Check for the following conditions that may cause the engine to run lean:
- Any water intrusion in the HO2S connector.
- An exhaust leak between the HO2S and the engine.
- Any vacuum leaks.
- Incorrect fuel pressure. Go to FUEL PRESSURE TEST under FUEL SYSTEMS (GASOLINE) in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - 2.2L ALERO, CAVALIER, GRAND AM & SUNFIRE article.
- Any restricted fuel injectors.
- Fuel contamination.
- Any vacuum hoses that are split, kinked, or improperly connected.
- Use a scan tool to monitor the Knock Sensor (KS) system for excessive spark retard activity.
- Check for throttle body tampering, excessive deposits, or damage.
- Check the Throttle Position (TP) sensor and related circuits.
- Check the crankcase ventilation system for proper operation.
