Piston Rings
Measure piston ring end gap and side clearance. If end gap and side clearance are not within specification, replace piston rings and/or piston as necessary. See PISTONS, PINS & RINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Install piston rings with piston ring installer in order to not damage rings. Install first ring with either side up. Install second ring with identification mark on ring land facing top of piston. Properly position ring end gaps around circumference of piston. See Figure.

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

- • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
- • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
