Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Diagnostic System Check: Testing

  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). If scan tool does not power up, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP under SYSTEM TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES - SIERRA, SILVERADO, SUBURBAN, TAHOE, YUKON & YUKON XL article.
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, attempt to establish communications with the following modules.
    • Automatic Transfer Case (ATC) Module
    • Body Control Module (BCM)
    • Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM)
    • Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC)
    • Real Time Damping (RTD) Module
    • Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Module
    • Vehicle Control Module (VCM)
    If communication is established, go to next step. If communication cannot be established, see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES - SIERRA, SILVERADO, SUBURBAN, TAHOE, YUKON & YUKON XL article.
  3. Using scan tool display, select DISPLAY DTCs function for the following control modules.
    • Automatic Transfer Case (ATC) Module
    • Body Control Module (BCM)
    • Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM)
    • Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC)
    • Real Time Damping (RTD) Module
    • Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Module
    • Vehicle Control Module (VCM)
    If scan tool displays any DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any DTCs, perform appropriate procedure under SYMPTOM TESTSΒ .
  4. NOTE: For additional information on VCM self-diagnostic system and DTCs, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  5. If scan tool does not display any DTCs beginning with "U", go to next step. If scan tool displays any DTCs beginning with "U" (indicating another module is not communicating), see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES - SIERRA, SILVERADO, SUBURBAN, TAHOE, YUKON & YUKON XL article.
  6. If scan tool displays DTC P1397, P1398 or P1480, perform appropriate test under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES - SIERRA, SILVERADO, SUBURBAN, TAHOE, YUKON & YUKON XL article. If scan tool does not display DTC P1397, P1398 or P1480, go to DIAGNOSTIC TESTSΒ .
