Oil Pump: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure
CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the engine oil level indicator from the guide tube.
3. Remove one bolt and guide from the oil pump.
4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
5. Remove the engine oil pan.
6. Remove the timing belt.

7. Remove the generator bracket bolt and the generator.
8. Remove the generator bracket from the cylinder block.

9. Lock the crankshaft, for vehicles with an automatic transmission, by locking the flywheel (1) as shown.

10. Remove the crankshaft timing belt pulley bolt (1).
11. Remove the crankshaft timing belt pulley (3).
12. Lower the vehicle.

13. Remove the seven oil pump mounting bolts and the oil pump from the cylinder block.
14. Remove the oil pump pins from the cylinder block.
Installation Procedure
Tools Required
^ J 34853 Crankshaft Oil Seal Guide
^ J 37747 Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer

1. Install the oil pump pins and the oil pump gasket onto the cylinder block.
2. Use a J 37747 in order to install the crankshaft oil seal into the oil pump body.

3. Apply engine oil to a J 34853.
4. Fit the J 34853 to the crankshaft.
IMPORTANT: Ensure that the oil seal lip is not turned out during oil pump installation.
5. Use the J 34853 in order to install the oil seal over the crankshaft.
6. Remove the J 34853.

7. Apply GM P/N 12346004 or the equivalent to the thread portion of the short oil pump mounting bolt (1) indicated.
NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
8. Install the oil pump mounting bolts to the oil pump assembly.
Tighten the oil pump mounting bolts to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.)

9. Install the rubber seal (2) between the oil pump (1) and the coolant pump (3).

10. Use a sharp knife in order to cut off the edge of the oil pump gasket if the edge of the gasket bulges out.
Verify that the edge is smooth and flush with the end faces of the pump case and the cylinder block.

11. Install the crankshaft timing belt pulley.
12. Install the crankshaft timing belt pulley bolt.
NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
13. Install the crank timing belt pulley bolt.
Tighten the crankshaft timing belt pulley bolt to 130 Nm (94 ft. lbs.)
14. Install the engine oil pan.
15. Install the timing belt.

16. Install the generator bracket to the cylinder block.
Tighten the generator bracket bolts to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.)
17. Install the generator bracket bolt and the generator.
Tighten the generator bracket bolts to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.)

18. Install the new guide tube oil seal (3) to the oil pump (2).
19. Install the guide tube (1) to the oil pump (2).
Use a guide tube bolt in order to secure the guide tube to the oil pump.
Tighten the guide tube bolt to 11 Nm (97 ft. lbs.).
20. Install the engine oil level indicator to the guide tube.
21. Refill the engine oil to specifications.
22. Connect the negative battery cable.
23. Run the engine in order to inspect the engine oil pressure.
CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

Tighten the generator bracket bolts to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.)
18. Install the new guide tube oil seal (3) to the oil pump (2).
19. Install the guide tube (1) to the oil pump (2).
Use a guide tube bolt in order to secure the guide tube to the oil pump.
Tighten the guide tube bolt to 11 Nm (97 ft. lbs.).
20. Install the engine oil level indicator to the guide tube.
21. Refill the engine oil to specifications.
22. Connect the negative battery cable.
23. Run the engine in order to inspect the engine oil pressure.
