Charging System Check

1999 Chevrolet Corvette 2D Coupe, StandardSECTION Charging System Check
  1. Turn ignition to start. If engine cranks, go to next step. If starter solenoid does not click or starter solenoid clicks, but engine does not crank, diagnose starter. See appropriate STARTERS article.
  2. Start engine. Turn HVAC to lower (floor) position, with fan on high speed. Turn high beam headlights on. Ensure idle is 800-1000 RPM. Check voltage at battery terminals. If voltage is not 12-16 volts, check generator using CS Electronic Generator Tester (J41450-B). Follow instructions provided with tester. Check system connectors and circuits for high resistance or open circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMSΒ  . Repair as necessary. If charge indicator is always on, go to CHARGE INDICATOR LIGHT ALWAYS ONΒ  . If voltmeter is inoperative, go to GAUGE INACCURATE OR INOPERATIVEΒ  .
