1996 Chevrolet Forward Control 6.5 Y, AutomaticSECTION Diagnostic Procedures
  1. Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition switch to ON position. DO NOTΒ  start engine. Using scan tool, record freeze frame and failure records for reference. Data will be lost when DTCs are cleared later in this test.
  2. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect input speed sensor connector. Start engine. Read input speed sensor voltage on scan tool. If voltage is more than .5 volt, go to next step. If voltage is less than .5 volt, check for open in input speed sensor low circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMSΒ . Repair circuit as necessary, then go to step 4.
  3. Check for open in input speed sensor high and low circuits. See WIRING DIAGRAMSΒ . Repair circuits as necessary, then go to next step. If circuit is okay, using a DVOM, measure across input speed sensor circuits at appropriate PCM connector terminals with engine running. See WIRING DIAGRAMSΒ . If voltage is more than .5 volt, replace PCM, then go to next step. If voltage is less than .5 volt, replace input speed sensor, then go to next step.
  4. After repair is complete, select DTC on scan tool. Select "Clear Info" function. Select "Specific DTC" and enter DTC "P0716". Start vehicle and place gear selector in Drive. PCM must detect a input speed change of less than 500 RPM for one second. If DTC P0716 is not present, repair is complete. If DTC P0716 is still present, repeat test.
