Description & Operation

1996 Chevrolet Corvette Base, 2D Coupe, 5.7 PSECTION Description & Operation
WARNING: Vehicle is equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Before attempting ANY repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.

Vehicle is equipped with the Personalized Automotive Security System (PASS-Key(R)), Fuel Enable Data Stream (FEDS) system and Universal Theft Deterrent (UTD) anti-theft system. PASS-Key(R) is designed to prevent vehicle theft by disabling engine unless an ignition key with a specific electrical resistance is used in ignition key lock cylinder. PASS-Key(R) system operates using sensing contacts which are located in ignition key lock cylinder. These contact a key resistor pellet which is located on the ignition key. When lock is rotated, battery voltage is applied through appropriate fuse to Central Control Module (CCM). Pellet resistance is then compared with programmed value in module.

System components include ignition key, ignition key lock cylinder, Central Control Module (CCM), theft deterrent relay and Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

The Fuel Enable Data Stream (FEDS) system operates in conjunction with PASS-Key(R) and UTD systems. FEDS system uses a password exchange system between PCM and CCM after the correct ignition key is inserted to enable fuel delivery to the engine.

The UTD option operates separately from PASS-Key(R) system. UTD sounds horn, disables fuel to injectors and disables starter in the event of forced entry through doors or rear hatch.
