Conditions For Setting DTC P0502
DTC will set under the following conditions:
- Transmission is not in Park or Neutral.
- DTCs P0122 and P0123 (throttle position sensor) are not present.
- DTC P0717 (input speed sensor signal) is not present.
- DTC P1810 (trans. fluid pressure position switch) is not present.
- Engine torque must be within 80 ft. lbs. (108 N.m) of following specifications: 275 ft. lbs. (345 N.m) on 4.3L, 375
- lbs. (470 N.m) on 5.7L, or 500 ft. lbs. (627 N.m) on 7.4L.
- Input speed is more than 2500 RPM.
- Output speed is less than 200 RPM for at least 3 seconds.
- Engine is running and not in fuel cutoff mode.
DTC P0502 will be stored in VCM history. MIL will light at first failure signal. VCM defaults a calculated output speed value by using input speed sensor values, freezes shift adapts from being updated and commands maximum line pressure.

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:
- β’ You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
- β’ Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
- β’ The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
- β’ You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
- β’ You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
