DIY auto repair can cause serious injury, fire, or vehicle damage. These guides are for informational purposes only. Always follow OEM torque specs, wear PPE, and consult a certified mechanic if you are unsure. You are solely responsible for your safety.
Starting System: Description
Five types of starters are used: SD-210/250/260, PG-260 and 28MT series. The first series is designated SD (Straight Drive) because the pinion is driven directly by the armature shaft. Wound field coils energize pole pieces that are arranged around the armature. These are used on gasoline engines.
The PG-260 and 28MT starters have a pinion that is driven by a gear reduction system. These starters are used on diesel or large displacement gasoline engines. The PG-260 starter should not be dissembled for any reason and is serviceable only by complete replacement.
