Diagnostic Procedures

1995 Chevrolet Cavalier LS, 2D Convertible, 2.2 4, StandardSECTION Diagnostic Procedures
  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool, clear DTC P1629. Turn ignition off and disconnect scan tool. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS. If engine does not start, go to next step.
  3. Install scan tool. Turn ignition on. If scan tool can communicate with IPC, go to next step. If scan tool cannot communicate with IPC, go to step 9).
  4. Using scan tool, read IPC DTCs. If DTC 21 (IPC communication loss from PCM) is set, go to next step. If DTC 21 is not set, go to step 11).
  5. If any other IPC DTCs are set, repair theft deterrent system as necessary. See appropriate ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT section. If no other IPC DTCs are set, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect scan tool. Disconnect PCM J2 connector. Connect DVOM to connector cavity J2-15 and DLC connector cavity 9. If resistance is less than .5 ohm, go to next step. If resistance is .5 ohm or more, go to step 8).
  7. Check PCM connector terminals. If terminals are clean and tight, replace PCM. After repair is completed, perform OBD System Check.
  8. Repair open in serial data (UART) circuit. After repair is completed, perform OBD System Check.
  9. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM J2 connector. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with IPC. If scan tool can communicate with IPC, go to next step. If scan tool cannot communicate with IPC, If scan tool cannot communicate with IPC, check for open, short to voltage or short to ground in serial data circuit. Repair as necessary.
  10. Inspect PCM connector and wiring between PCM and DLC. Repair as necessary. After repair is completed, perform OBD System Check. If no problem is found, go to step 13).
  11. If PCM, IPC or lock cylinder was just replaced, go to next step. If PCM, ICP or lock cylinder was not replaced, repair theft deterrent system as necessary. See appropriate ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT section.
  12. Perform PASSWORD LEARN PROCEDURE. After learn procedure is completed, attempt to start engine. If engine starts and continues to run, perform OBD System Check. If engine does not start or starts but does not continue to run, repeat step 2).
  13. Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM using required equipment. After repair is completed, go to next step.
