Code 32, EGR System Error: Notes

1994 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24, 2D Coupe, StandardSECTION Notes

A properly operating EGR system will directly affect air/fuel mixture requirements of the engine. Since the exhaust gas introduced into air/fuel mixture contains very little oxygen and can not be used in combustion, less fuel is required to maintain a correct air/fuel ratio. If EGR system were to fail in a closed position, exhaust gas would be replaced with air and air/fuel mixture would be leaner. PCM would compensate for lean condition by adding fuel, resulting in higher long term fuel trim values.

Fuel control is conducted within fuel trim cells. Since EGR is not used at idle, idle cell would not be affected by EGR system operation. Long term fuel trim values in all cells will be close to one another when EGR system is properly functioning. If EGR system is inoperative, long term fuel trim values in open throttle cells would change to compensate for resulting lean or rich mixtures, but values in closed throttle cell would not change.
