Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) System
This system does not allow the shift lever to be moved out of Park unless the brake pedal is pressed. With the brake pedal released and the ignition on, current flows through the BTSI solenoid to ground, energizing the solenoid. With the solenoid energized, a lock pawl protrudes from the solenoid, preventing the shift lever from being moved.
With the brake pedal pressed, current flows through the stoplight switch to the ground side of the solenoid. Under this condition, battery voltage is available on the positive and negative sides of the solenoid. This causes the solenoid to de-energize, releasing the lock pawl.
