Disc Caliper - Rear: Disassembly

  1. With caliper held in a vise, remove mounting bolt sleeves and boots from caliper. Remove brake pads (if not already removed) and lever return spring. Using a shop towel to catch piston and brake fluid, rotate lever back and forth to move piston out of caliper.
    NOTE: If piston will not release from caliper, remove lock nut, lever, seal and anti-friction washer (if equipped). Turn actuator screw until piston releases from caliper.
  2. Remove piston seal and balance spring. Remove lock nut, lever, seal and anti-friction washer (if equipped). Push screw from caliper and remove shaft seal, thrust washer, boot and piston seal.
  3. Clean all parts with denatured alcohol. Inspect caliper bore for scoring, nicks, corrosion or wear. Use crocus cloth to polish any light corrosion. Replace caliper if needed. Check piston outer diameter for nicks, scoring or damage and replace if needed. Inspect mounting bolt sleeves and boots for damage or corrosion. Replace if necessary.
