Gearshift Housing & Mechanism: Installation

1987 Chevrolet Chevy Van G30, 5.7 K, 400/M40SECTION Installation
  1. Rotate each shaft fork bore to neutral (straight up). Install 3rd-overdrive shift fork into bore under both interlock levers. Set both synchronizer sleeves in neutral. Place 1st-2nd shift fork in groove of 1st-2nd synchronizer sleeve.
  2. Slide reverse idler gear to neutral. Place transmission on right side. Position gearshift housing gasket on case using grease to retain gasket. Install reverse detent ball and spring into bore in side of case.
  3. Lower shift housing into place. Guide 3rd-overdrive shift fork into 3rd-overdrive synchronizer groove. Place shaft of 1st-2nd shift fork into bore of 1st-2nd shift lever. Hold reverse interlock link against 1st-2nd shift lever to provide clearance while cover is lowered.
  4. Using screwdriver, raise interlock lever against spring tension to allow 1st-2nd shift fork shaft to slip under levers. Ensure that reverse detent spring is positioned in cover bore. Cover should seat against case gasket.
  5. Install housing bolts finger tight and shift transmission through all gears to ensure proper operation. Grease reverse shaft. Install operating lever and retaining nut. Shift transmission into each gear to check for correct shift travel and smooth action.
NOTE: Eight shift housing bolts are shoulder bolts for locating shift mechanism. One bolt has longer shoulder and acts as locating dowel into case in center rear hole of flange. Two bolts at lower rear of cover are standard.
