Idle Stop Solenoid (ISS)

1987 Chevrolet Caprice Classic, 4D WagonSECTION Idle Stop Solenoid (ISS)

The solenoid is actuated by an ECM controlled relay for 2 operational modes:

  • On A/C equipped vehicles, the idle stop solenoid is used to increase idle speed to compensate for A/C compressor load. When the climate control switch is moved to a position that turns on the A/C compressor, the ISS is energized and the plunger extends, to give a greater throttle opening, and maintain idle speed.
  • On all applications, the solenoid plunger extends during certain deceleration modes for improved emission control. This action also occurs on A/C equipped vehicles, whether A/C switch is on or off. Specific adjustment procedure is included on the vehicle emission decal.
