Overhaul - MUNCIE 76 Mm 4-Speed: Description
The Muncie built 4-speed transaxle is mounted in common 2-piece aluminum case. This transaxle is fully synchronized in all forward gears. Forward gears are helically cut and in constant mesh. Reverse gear is non-synchronized, spur cut and is engaged by a sliding reverse idler gear. 4th gear is an overdrive speed.
These 4-speed models use preloaded tapered roller bearings to support the input gear, output gear and differential assemblies. Final output gear is integral with the shaft, which turns the ring gear, differential assemblies and the drive wheels. See Figure . Gears shifting is accomplished by 2 cable assemblies, the trans-selector and trans-shifter cables.
