Forward Clutch: Reassembly
1985 Chevrolet Impala 4.3 Z, 700R4/MD8SECTION Reassembly
- Install clutch apply ring on piston. Install new inner and outer seals on piston, with seal lips facing away from apply ring side. Lubricate seals with transmission fluid. Install piston into housing. Install retainer and spring assembly into housing. Compress retainer and springs, and install retaining snap ring.CAUTION: Use care when installing piston past large snap ring groove as groove could cut outer piston seal.
- Lubricate with transmission fluid then install forward clutch plates into housing starting with waved steel plate then alternating flat steel plates and composition plates until all clutch plates are installed.
- See FORWARD CLUTCH PLATE USAGEΒ . Install backing plate (chamfered side up) and clutch pack snap ring. Install new turbine shaft seal rings (if removed) and forward clutch-to-direct clutch thrust washer.
NOTE:
After reassembly is completed, ensure composition faced clutch plates turn freely.
