MAINSHAFT & Extension Housing: Disassembly
1983 Chevrolet Chevy Van G30, 5.7 M, 475/M40SECTION Disassembly
- Remove snap ring retaining 3rd-overdrive synchronizer on mainshaft. Slide assembly off mainshaft, followed by overdrive gear and stop ring. Compress snap ring holding mainshaft ball bearing in extension housing.
- Pull mainshaft and bearing out of housing. Remove snap ring retaining mainshaft bearing on shaft. Place steel plates on front side of 1st gear and press or drive mainshaft through bearing.
- Remove bearing, snap ring, 1st gear and stop ring from shaft. Remove snap ring retaining 1st-2nd synchronizer assembly on mainshaft. Slide synchronizer assembly and 2nd gear off mainshaft. See Figure .
