Bearing Preload

1983 Chevrolet Cavalier CS, 2D Convertible, 2.0 B, Standard, M19SECTION Bearing Preload
  1. Position outer bearing races on input, output and differential assembly bearings. Install gauges on bearing races. See Fig 1 . Place seven (7) Spacers (J-33373) evenly around perimeter of clutch housing. Install bearing and shim retainer on transaxle case. Tighten bearing and shim retainer bolts to specification. Refer to the TORQUE SPECIFICATIONSΒ  .

  2. Carefully position transaxle case over gauges and onto spacers on clutch housing surface. See Fig 2 . Install bolts and tighten bolts alternately to gradually draw transaxle case to spacers on clutch housing. Tighten retaining bolts to specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONSΒ  . Rotate each gauge to seat bearings.
  3. Rotate differential assembly 3 revolutions in each direction. With gauges compressed, measure gap between outer sleeve and base pad of each shaft. This will provide shim thickness required for proper bearing preload at each shaft. See Fig 3 .

  4. On output shaft, use largest shim size that can be placed into gap and drawn through without binding. On input shaft, use a shim 2 sizes smaller than largest shim that will fit in gap. See Fig 3 .
  5. On differential assembly use a shim three (3) sizes larger than shim that will fit smoothly in gap. See Fig 3 . When shims are selected, remove clutch housing, spacers and gauges. Install shims into their respective race bores in clutch housing.
