Pulley Bearing Replacement
1971 Chevrolet Chevelle Concours, Not Available, 5.0L Eng, Eng CD CCCSECTION Pulley Bearing Replacement
NOTE:
On American Motors Compressors, pulley assembly parts are not furnished separately, and no attempt should be made to replace bearing or clutch plate. On Ford Motor Company compressors, if pulley bearings are available, clutch assembly can be disassembled and bearing replaced as directed below; otherwise replace clutch as an assembly.
- REMOVE BEARING CAUTION: Pulley bearing must be discarded and new bearing installed whenever bearing is removed.
- Remove snap ring from end of drive plate shaft. Support clutch in arbor press with drive plate downward (supports must clear drive plate), use suitable tool to apply pressure to end of drive plate shaft and press drive plate out of bearing.
- Remove bearing retainer from pulley hub. Support pulley in arbor press with support positioned to clear bearing recess, use suitable tool to press bearing out of pulley, discard the old bearing.CAUTION: If grease catcher installed in pulley above bearing, tool must clear grease catcher as grease catcher should not be removed from pulley.

- INSTALL BEARING
- Thoroughly clean all bearing contact surfaces of pulley and drive plate shaft. Support pulley assembly face down in arbor press (support should clear bearing bore but not be located at sides of pulley grooves which would distort pulley).
- Position new bearing on pulley, use tool engaging outer race of bearing only to press bearing in until seated in pulley. Install bearing retainer in pulley hub.
- Support pulley face up in arbor press using a support engaging inner
race of bearing only, position drive plate on bearing and press plate in by applying pressure only on end of shaft (insert bolt into front of face plate and press on bolt). Install snap ring in groove in end of shaft, check assembly for free rotation without looseness.
