Initial Inspection - Charging System
1996 Cadillac Eldorado V8-4.6L VIN 9SECTION Initial Inspection - Charging System
Fig. 3 CS Charging System Wiring Diagram:
When the charging system is operating normally, the indicator lamp will come On when ignition switch is turned On and will go out when the engine starts. If the lamp operates abnormally, or if an undercharge or overcharge battery condition occurs, the following may be used to diagnose the charging system.
1. An undercharged battery is often caused by accessories being left On extended periods of time, or if an accessory lamp stays On.
2. Noise from an alternator may be caused by a loose drive pulley, loose mounting bolts, worn or dirty bearings, defective diodes or a defective stator.
3. To avoid damage to electrical equipment, refer to charging circuit wiring diagram, Fig. 3 , and proceed as follows:
a. Do not reverse connections to the alternator.
b. Do not short across or ground any of the terminals in charging system.
c. Never disconnect output terminal while alternator is running.
4. Trouble in the charging system will appear as follows:
a. Faulty indicator lamp operation.
b. Undercharge battery, as evidenced by slow cranking or dark hydrometer.
c. Overcharge battery, as evidenced by spewing of electrolyte from the vents.
