Brake Signal: Description and Operation
1996 Cadillac Eldorado V8-4.6L VIN 9SECTION Description and Operation
DESCRIPTION
The Brake Booster Vacuum (BBV) sensor measures the vacuum level in the brake booster and converts it to a voltage signal. The PCM reads this voltage signal and converts it back to a vacuum level. The BBV sensor is very similar to a MAP sensor except for one very important difference. The BBV sensor signal is an indication of vacuum instead of pressure so as the vacuum in the brake booster increases (pressure decreases), the voltage signal increases.
BBV SENSOR PARAMETER
The BBV sensor parameter also displays a vacuum level, so a low reading indicates low vacuum (near atmospheric pressure) in the brake booster and a high reading indicates high vacuum in the brake booster. The brake booster vacuum signal is used to control engine torque output while the brakes are applied.

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:
- β’ You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
- β’ Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
- β’ The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
- β’ You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
- β’ You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
