IGNITION TIMING
Timing Mark
The ignition timing marks are located on the engine front cover. A saw slot on the crankshaft balancer assembly indicates No. 1 piston position.
Timing Specification
Refer to vehicle "Emission Control Information" label under the hood for the timing specification. If label is missing or unreadable, set timing to 0° (in "DRIVE").
SETTING IGNITION TIMING
Adjust
1. Set parking brake and block drive wheels.
2. Start engine and verify that "Service Engine Soon" light is not illuminated.
Set Timing Connector:
3. With engine running at normal operating temperature, turn off air conditioning and all accessories and ground Ignition Control (IC) by-pass connector. The IC by-pass connector is a single lead wire that breaks out of engine wiring harness assembly to right of throttle body assembly. Refer to the accompanying image for its location.
NOTE: An Engine Control Module (ECM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the IC by-pass connector is grounded.
4. Place vehicle in "DRIVE".
Ignition Distributor Assembly (Typical):
5. Use a timing light to set timing to specifications by loosening the distributor clamp bolt/screw (3) (Refer to accompanying image for numbered references) and rotating the distributor assembly until specified timing is obtained. Tighten bolt/screw (3) to 36 Nm (27 ft lb).
6. Recheck the timing to make sure the distributor assembly was not moved when the distributor clamp bolt/screw was tightened.
7. Turn the engine off and disconnect the IC By-Pass connector from ground.
8. Clear ECM code as-described in Vehicle On-Board Diagnostics/Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
