SERVICE INFORMATION
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
CONDITION/CONCERN
Some customers may comment on a grind growl noise on the 1-2 shift that can be felt in the clutch pedal and brake pedal if applied during a 1-2 shift under light or normal acceleration. Concern may be hard to duplicate unless making the shift at 10 miles per hour, and only the first time per drive cycle that 10 miles per hour is achieved.
This PI was written for manual shift vehicles as the customer usually notices this coinciding with a shift. Under light to moderate throttle, the upshift light may come on in the 10 MPH range and the customer sees the light and hears this noise which leads the customer to believe that the noise is related to the manual transmission or clutch. This self-test will happen on automatic transmission equipped vehicles as well as it is a normal function of the ABS system to perform this self-test.
RECOMMENDATION/INSTRUCTIONS
This condition can be caused by the anti-lock brake system conducting a self-test at 10 miles per hour and if the customer is shifting at that speed they may feel the condition in the pedal assembly. This is because the pedals and the anti-lock brake system motor are both mounted to the cowl. No repairs should be attempted. Please explain this to your customer.
Perform visual inspection of brake lines to ensure all lines are routed properly and secured, as any lines making contact with another component can further aggravate this condition.
