Safety Warning
DIY auto repair can cause serious injury, fire, or vehicle damage. These guides are for informational purposes only. Always follow OEM torque specs, wear PPE, and consult a certified mechanic if you are unsure. You are solely responsible for your safety.
Test 8: RAINSENSE(R) System Operates Incorrectly Or Not At All
2000 Buick Park Avenue Base, 3.8 KSECTION Test 8: RAINSENSE(R) System Operates Incorrectly Or Not At All
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Turn wiper switch to HIGH position. If wipers do not operate, see TEST 4: WIPERS DO NOT OPERATE IN HIGH SPEED . If wipers operate, go to next step.
- Turn wiper switch to middle of AUTO DELAY position. If wipers make one complete sweep and pause (similar to non-automatic delay system), go to step 4 . If wipers do not make one complete sweep and pause (similar to non-automatic delay system), go to next step.
- Turn wiper switch to next highest sensitivity position (toward LOW). If an instant wipe occurs when increasing sensitivity, go to step 5 . If an instant wipe does not occur when increasing sensitivity, see TEST 7: PULSE DELAY OPERATES INCORRECTLY OR NOT AT ALL .
- Rotate wiper switch to highest sensitivity position (closest to LOW). Rotate wiper switch to second highest sensitivity position (one detent away from LOW). If an instant wipe occurred when switch was moved to second highest sensitivity position from highest position, go to step 6 . If an instant wipe did not occur when switch was moved to second highest sensitivity position from highest position, go to step 13 .
- Replace outside moisture sensor. See OUTSIDE MOISTURE SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
- Disconnect outside moisture sensor connector mounted near right front of inside rear view mirror. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Connect test light between outside moisture sensor connector terminals No. 7 (Black/White wire) and 8 (Yellow wire). If test light is on, go to step 10 . If test light is not on, go to next step.
- Connect test light between outside moisture sensor connector terminal No. 8 (Yellow wire) and ground. If test light is on, go to next step. If test light is not on, go to step 9 .
- Repair open in Black/White wire between outside moisture sensor connector terminal No. 7 and ground connection. Ground connection is located in right side of luggage compartment, behind wheelhouse. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Repair open in Yellow wire between outside moisture sensor connector terminal No. 8 and WSW/RFA fuse located in instrument panel junction block. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Disconnect wiper motor connector. Using ohmmeter, check continuity of Light Green wire between wiper motor connector terminal "F" and outside moisture sensor connector terminal No. 5. See Figure . If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, go to step 12 .
- Replace outside moisture sensor. See OUTSIDE MOISTURE SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
- Repair open in Light Green wire between wiper motor connector terminal "F" and outside moisture sensor connector terminal No. 5. After repair, perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
- Move wiper switch from second highest sensitivity position to third highest sensitivity position. If an instant wipe occurs, go to next step. If an instant wipe does not occur, go to step 15 .
- Replace outside moisture sensor. See OUTSIDE MOISTURE SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
- Move wiper switch from third highest sensitivity position to fourth sensitivity position. If an instant wipe occurs, go to next step. If an instant wipe does not occur, go to step 19 .
- Check for dirty glass or clouded outside moisture sensor attachment. If glass is dirty, clean glass as necessary and retest system. If outside moisture sensor attachment (adhesive tape) is clouded, go to next step. If windshield is clean and tape is not clouded, go to step 18 .
- Remove and reinstall outside moisture sensor with new adhesive tape. See OUTSIDE MOISTURE SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
- Replace outside moisture sensor. See OUTSIDE MOISTURE SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
- Move wiper switch from fourth highest sensitivity position to fifth highest sensitivity position. If an instant wipe occurs, go to step 21 . If an instant wipe does not occur, go to next step.
- Replace outside moisture sensor. See OUTSIDE MOISTURE SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
- Check for an open in Black wire between outside moisture sensor connector terminal No. 6 and wiper motor connector terminal "E". If Black wire is open, go to next step. If Black wire is okay, go to step 23 .
- Repair open in Black wire between outside moisture sensor connector terminal No. 6 and wiper motor connector terminal "E". After repair, perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
- Replace wiper motor cover. See WIPER MOTOR COVER (CIRCUIT BOARD) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If problem still exists, replace outside moisture sensor. See OUTSIDE MOISTURE SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
