Diagnostic Procedures

1996 Buick Roadmaster BaseSECTION Diagnostic Procedures
  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
    NOTE: If DTC(s) P0530, P1545 and P1546 are present, diagnose affected DTC(s) first.
  2. Start and operate engine at idle. Turn A/C on. If A/C clutch engages, go to next step. If A/C clutch does not engage, go to step 5).
  3. Using scan tool, select ENGINE 1 DATA LIST and observe A/C high pressure side. Turn A/C off for 10 seconds. Turn A/C on for 10 seconds. If A/C high side pressure increases to greater than 4 psi (.3 kg/cm2 ) when A/C is turned on, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS. If A/C high side pressure did not increase to greater than 4 psi (.3 kg/cm2 ) when A/C is turned on, go to next step.
  4. Repair faulty A/C refrigerant pressure sensor connection or for faulty pressure sensor. After repairs, go to step 12).
  5. If scan tool indicates that A/C clutch is on, go to step 7). If scan tool does not indicate that A/C clutch is on, go to next step.
  6. Repair intermittent A/C clutch circuit from A/C relay to splice. After repairs, go to step 12).
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect A/C compressor clutch harness connector. Using a test light connected to battery ground, probe A/C clutch battery supply circuit. Start engine and turn A/C on. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 10).
  8. Using test light, probe A/C compressor clutch battery supply circuit to A/C compressor clutch ground circuit. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 11).
  9. Repair faulty A/C clutch connection or open A/C clutch coil. After repairs, go to step 12).
  10. Repair open or shorted A/C clutch battery supply circuit. After repairs, go to step 12).
  11. Repair open in A/C clutch ground circuit. After repairs, go to next step.
  12. Using scan tool, select DTC, CLEAR INFO function. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Select DTC, SPECIFIC, then enter DTC P0531. Operate vehicle within conditions for setting this DTC. If scan tool indicates that this test ran and passed, go to next step. If scan tool did not indicate that this test ran and passed, repeat step 2).
  13. Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO, REVIEW INFO function. If any undiagnosed DTC(s) are displayed, go to applicable DTC test.
