Code A036: Pump Motor Will Not Run

1990 Buick Regal Custom, 3.8 L, 4T60/ME9SECTION Code A036: Pump Motor Will Not Run

Voltage is applied to pump on input when pump motor relay contacts are closed. The accumulator switch opens when pressure drops below 1800 psi (127 kg/cm2 ), and ground to the lamp driver module is removed. The lamp driver module then closes the switch to activate the BRAKE warning indicator and apply voltage to low brake pressure input of anti-lock brake controller. To set Code A036, the following conditions must occur.

  • Anti-lock brake controller senses no voltage at terminal 1C12.
  • Anti-lock brake controller senses voltage at terminal 1C10.

NOTE: Test numbers refer to test numbers on diagnostic chart.
  1. If Code A031 set, inspect for bad connection at pump motor relay or connector C160.
  2. If pump motor operates, fault is in low-pressure circuit or pump motor relay circuit.
  3. Determines if fault is in accumulator switch circuit or pump motor relay circuit.
  4. Verifies fault still exists.
  5. Battery voltage at terminal "A" indicates relay coil power feed is okay.
  6. If pump motor operates, check accumulator switch or hydraulic system for malfunction.
  7. Check for open ground circuit to accumulator switch.
  8. Determines if circuit No. 973 is open.
  9. A good power feed to relay contact indicates defective pump motor relay.
