IHKR E34 - VISUAL IDENTIFICATION

- The IHKR1 control panel has plain, smooth push buttons for rear window defroster; recirculating air, and A/C compressor operation.
- IHKR1 buttons operate detent-type switches.

- IHKR2 and IHKR/F3 push buttons have LEDs above the function symbols.
- IHKR2 and IHKR/F3 buttons operate momentary-contact switches.

Distinguishing between IHKR2 and IHKR/F3 Systems is harder since the control panels are visually the same:
- Check the glovebox for a microfilter sticker.
- From 9/91 to 5/92 the sticker was red and placed next to the orange SRS sticker.
- In 5/92, the sticker color was changed to black.

If you can't find a sticker (many early production vehicles equipped with IHKR/F3 didn't have it), check the Production Date Charts provided below.

- IHKR2 was installed only on cars built between 1/90 and 10/90, so most 1991 model year and all later E34s will have IHKR/F3.
- To be sure that you're looking at IHKR/F3, check for the presence of the microfilter; IHKR/F3 has it, whereas IHKR2 does not.
