EQUIPMENT SETUP

The BMW secondary voltage test adapter kit (12 7 040) or equivalent will be necessary to check:
- Secondary voltage patterns.
- Comparison between ignition coils from different manufacturers.
- Ignition coil fault.
- Injection system fault.

Connect special tool 12 7 043 (adapter cable) to special tool 12 7 041 (single adapter).

Special tool 12 7 041 (single adapter) for fitting to the ignition coil.
NOTE: When checking the compact ignition coils (e.g. M43 Eng.) use additional special tool 12 7 045.

Special tool 12 7 042 for connecting special tool 12 7 041 to the BMW Service Tester. This adapter replaces the high tension pickup which is normally used when checking non Direct Ignition System (DIS) ignition systems.
NOTE: If a BMW Service Tester is not available, a common workshop oscilloscope with test leads may be used. Special tool 12 7 042 is then replaced by the oscilloscope measuring cable and triggering occurs externally using the induction pliers connected to the primary voltage source on the 1st cylinder.

Unclip caps from ignition coil cover.
Unscrew bolts.
Remove cover from oil filler neck.

Remove ignition coil cover.
NOTE: If it is not possible to remove the ignition coil cover, remove the injector valve cover.

Switch "Off" ignition.
Firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4 (example shown).

Mount special tool 12 7 041 on ignition coils and connect using special tool 12 7 043.

Unscrew high tension clip from the connecting lead of the BMW Service Tester.
Connect special tool 12 7 042 to the high tension connecting lead of the BMW Service Tester.

Connect BMW Service Tester to diagnosis socket (1) in the car.
Connect special tool 12 7 042 (2) to high tension connecting lead (3) of the BMW Service Tester.
Connect trigger clip (4) of the BMW Service Tester to power supply lead of the ignition coil for cylinder no. 1.

Apply the parking brake and move the manual transmission shift lever to neutral or the automatic transmission selector lever to "P". Select the type of display of secondary voltage on the oscilloscope.
