SUBJECT: Driver's Door Lock Heating and Automatic Interior Light Control
MODEL: 7-Series (E 32)
The functions of the driver's door lock heating and automatic interior light control are now controlled by the General Module (GM) of the Central Body Electronics (ZKE). The operating modes of these two components differ from previous models to better suit customer needs and minimize power requirements.
Power for these components goes through a Relay Module which is controlled by the General Module. Both of these modules are located under the left-hand side of the rear seat.
Defects which may occur in these systems are stored in the memory of the General Module and may be displayed on the BMW Service Tester via the diagnostic module.
Door Lock Heating
A 95 watt heating coil, located around the door lock for quick and safe defrosting, is controlled via the General Module by pulling up on the driver's door handle. Precautions have been programmed in the General Module to prevent excessive current draw from the battery. These precautions are:
^ ignition must be in position "O";
^ doors must be locked for at least 32 seconds;
^ heating does not start until 3 seconds have passed after lifting the door handle;
NOTE: A delay of 32 seconds after locking the doors is incorporated to prevent unintentional operation of the heating coil if the door handle is lifted.
^ heating period is limited to a maximum of 36 seconds; and
^ heating period of 36 seconds may only be repeated three times before a ten minute delay takes place.
More detailed information is available in the 1988 7-Series (E 32) Electrical Troubleshooting Manual as follows:

Automatic Interior Light Control
The interior lights are now controlled by the General Module (GM) of the Central Body Electronics (ZKE). The one exception is when the interior light switch has been moved to the "constant on" position.
The interior lights are automatically turned "ON" if:
^ the driver's door handle is lifted;
NOTE: A delay of ten minutes after the third lift of the door handle is required to avoid running the battery down.
^ any door is opened;
^ the ignition key is turned to position "O" after having had the headlights or parking lights on; and
^ the impact sensor in the central locking system is activated and unlocks the doors.
The interior lights are automatically turned "OFF" under these circumstances:
^ eight seconds after the driver's door handle is lifted;
^ twenty seconds after the driver's door has been opened and closed;
NOTE: In this mode the lights are turned off immediately if the ignition is turned to position 1, 2, or 3.
^ four seconds after opening and closing of a door and central locking activated; and
^ sixteen minutes after the opening of any door.
