SUBJECT: Diagnostic Module for BMW Service Tester

MODEL: 735i (E32)

The new 735i (E32) model will incorporate highly sophisticated electronic systems with selfdiagnostic capabilities. These systems will be gradually introduced in all future BMW models. An electronic Diagnostic Module to check and interact with these systems was developed by BMW with SUN Electric, Inc. as an addition to the BMW Service Tester.

FUNCTION:

The "brains" of the new electronic systems in the 735i are Control Units that can identify and remember faulty signals at their connections during operation of the car. When the Diagnostic Module is later plugged into the car, it establishes a two-way communication with these Control Units. On the one hand, it extracts information on faulty signals from the Control Unit's memory and displays it on its screen, and on the other hand, it can send commands to the Control Units to activate certain electrical components.

The Diagnostic Module is the only commercially available Unit that will allow a technician, through this two-way communication process with the Control Units of the car, to locate and check or repair faulty electrical circuits.

SOFTWARE:

The software containing the communication programs for the Diagnostic Module as well as the specifications for each model BMW will be carried on a 3.5 inch diskette that will be automatically distributed to dealers, and updated similarly to the present microfiches. This diskette is of the heavy duty type with dust protection cover suitable for Workshop utilization.

SERVICE REQUIREMENT:

Since the electronic systems of the new 735i cannot be checked, adjusted or repaired without this Diagnostic Module, this Module is a mandatory requirement for any BMW dealer.

INSTALLATION UPDATE OF THE BMW SERVICE TESTER:

The installation of the Diagnostic Module will be done by a SUN Electric Specialist. The function and operation of the Service Tester is still the same, even with the installation of the Diagnostic Module.

Installation of the Diagnostic Module will begin in October '86. Since the BMW Tester itself must be in fully operational condition before this installation (except for the Pushbutton Panel which will be replaced), SUN Electric will inspect each BMW Tester at no charge to dealers. Repairs of problems uncovered by this inspection will be done at the dealer's expense unless covered by the provisions of a SUN Service Contract. Also, the Microfiche Reader needs to be updated, if not done previously, at the dealer's expense. The dealer will have to place a Service call with SUN following the inspection to have these repairs performed.
WARRANTY:

The price of the Diagnostic Module includes a one year warranty on the Module, and a Service Contract for the 2nd year. It also includes a two year Service Contract on the BMW Tester itself. For BMW Testers under Warranty or under Service Contract, the unused portion of the Warranty or Service Contract will be prorated and added to the new coverage.

Both, the Warranty and the Service Contracts, will start on February 1, 1987, for Testers updated with the Diagnostic Module prior to this date.
