SUBJECT: Integrated Circuit Damage in Electronic Units Caused by Static Electric Discharge
MODELS: All
Situation: The sophistication of today's Integrated Circuits (IC's) makes them extremely susceptible to damage caused by static electric discharge.
As the enclosed literature from 3M states, it takes only 30 volts of static electricity to partially or fully remove the memory of a chip. They further explain that in 10-20% relative humidity, the simple act of sliding across a velour seat creates 15,000 volts of static electricity.
Correction: In order to avoid the high cost of the above mentioned failure, BMW has acquired a 3M Static Protection Kit for every dealer, which will be used by the technician in conjunction with all electronic repairs:
Static Protection Kit P/N 88 88 6 900 333
Introductory Price: $39.00
Please insure that all service and parts personnel are aware and understand this problem. Parts personnel should never remove electronic equipment from its shipping container without the use of a Static Protection Kit.
This tool will be sent to all BMW Automotive dealers under the Automatic Tool Shipment Program. Additional Kits may be ordered directly through your Parts Distribution Center.
