Service Intervals
BMW uses an on-board computer system to determine when a service should be done on a vehicle. The system takes into account driving habits (hard/soft acceleration, temperatures, number of starts, etc) to calculate when the optimum time is due for a service. The system will then light an "indicated service" due light on the dash to let the driver know it is time for service.
Because of this, exact mileage intervals cannot be given. However, the following may be used as a general guideline.
- Oil Service is normally due at intervals with a maximum of 7,500 miles or 6 months.
- Inspection I is normally due at intervals with a maximum of 15,000 miles or 12 months.
- Inspection II is normally due at intervals with a maximum of 30,000 miles or 24 months.
Inspection
The "Inspection" indicator signals the need for more comprehensive maintenance and inspection. There are two sets of inspection requirements - Inspection I and Inspection II. These inspections alternate throughout a car's maintenance history. If the last inspection interval was Inspection I, the next inspection interval (following an oil service) will be Inspection II, the next after that will be Inspection I, and so on.

Note: Inspection II includes all of Inspection I + additional checks and services.
