Repair Information
The maximum possible care and cleanliness and proper tools are essential to ensure satisfactory and successful transmission repairs. The usual basic safety precautions also, naturally apply when carrying out vehicle service.
A number of generally applicable instructions for individual repair operations, which are otherwise mentioned at various points in the Service Information, are summarized here. They apply to this repair information.
Transmission
- Automatic transmission clean working conditions, refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .
- Support the torque converter from falling out using bracket 30 - 211 A when both the transmission and left flange shaft are removed.
- Always use approved ATF or Vaseline. Other types of lubrication cause faults to occur in the transmission hydraulics.
- The old transmission should be installed and put into operation as quickly as possible to prevent corrosion on the newly installed components.
- Check and fill all fluids after installing. Capacities and specifications, refer to Capacities .
Dirt Near the ATF
Heavy dirt near the ATF caused by worn friction linings:
- Disassemble the transmission completely and clean.
- Disassemble the clutches and check them.
- Replace the torque converter (because it cannot be cleaned).
- Replace the Mechatronic (it cannot be cleaned).
- Clean the ATF lines and ATF cooler, and then replace the ATF filter.
O-rings, Seals, Shaft Seals and Gaskets
- O-rings, seals, shaft seals and gaskets must be replaced.
- After removing gaskets, examine contact surface on housing/shaft for burrs resulting from removal or for other signs of damage.
- The open side of the shaft seals point toward the fluid to be sealed in.
- To install, thinly coat shaft seals along outer circumference and on the sealing lip with ATF.
- Coat O-rings with transmission fluid or Vaseline before inserting to prevent crushing rings during installation.
- Always only use approved ATF or Vaseline. Other types of lubrication cause faults to occur in the transmission hydraulics.
- Press in new shaft seal, so that the sealing lip does not run on the same point as the sealing lip of the old shaft seal (use insertion depth tolerances).
- Remove the old seals completely, clean the sealing surfaces thoroughly and replace the seals.
Bolts and Nuts
- Loosen the bolts opposite the tightening sequence.
- Nuts and bolts which secure covers and housings should be loosened and tightened crosswise in stages if no tightening sequence is specified.
- The tightening specifications stated apply to non-oiled nuts and bolts.
- Always replace self-locking nuts and bolts.
Fasteners
- Do not overstretch the circlips.
- Always replace damaged or stretched circlips.
- The circlips must fit completely inside the groove.
- Replace the adapter sleeves. Installed position: Slit is longitudinal to direction of force -arrow-.
Bearings
- Coat bearing with ATF before inserting.
- Only use Vaseline for the bearing and adjusting ring. Other types of lubrication lead to faults in the transmission hydraulics.
Oil Pipes
- Oil pipes must be replaced if the transmission is extremely contaminated.

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

- • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
- • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
