CONDITION
This RVU has been proactively released to prevent and correct the following condition from occurring in the vehicle:
MIL on and DTC P0601 (ECM malfunction) stored in the Engine Control Module data memory. No driveability concern.
This Required Vehicle Update (RVU) is in effect for 15 months from date of publication. After that date, this RVU will expire and no longer be in effect.
Vehicle must meet all of the following criteria:
- Procedure is valid only for vehicles that show the I3 code in the ElsaWeb View Campaign inquiry screen on the day of repair.
- Vehicle must be within the Federal Emissions Warranty.
- Procedure must be performed within the allotted time frame stated in this Technical Service Bulletin.
- Procedure must also be performed on applicable vehicles in Dealer inventory prior to sale.
TECHNICAL BACKGROUND
The cause is the software of the Engine Control Module (ECM).
PRODUCTION SOLUTION
Improved software for the ECM.
SERVICE
Update the ECM software of the affected vehicles (two ECMs for RS4, S6 and S8) using the SVM action codes listed in the table below.
Current Tuned ECM or TCM requirements: If you encounter a vehicle with a tuned ECM or TCM, your dealership must do the following before performing any procedure that updates ECM or TCM programming:
- Notify the owner that their ECM or TCM was found to have been tuned.
- Notify the owner that any damage caused by the tuning of the ECM or TCM (including any adverse emissions consequences) will not be covered by Audi of America, Inc. warranties.
- Obtain the owner's written consent (see attached Control Module Tuning form) for any requested repair under warranty or outside warranty that requires flashing, which will automatically overwrite the tuned program.
- Ensure the Control Module Tuning form has been filled out by the owner.
- For A4 (B7) always use the 6017B K Line Adapter to ensure communication to all modules.
Tip: The SVM Process must be completed in its entirety so the database receives the update confirmation response. A warranty claim may not be reimbursed if there is no confirmation response to support the claim.
Tip: The electric cooling fan may be activated during the ECM flashing procedure.
- After the update programming of the ECM, it is not necessary to set the Readiness Code.
- If the update programming aborts for any reason before full completion, ensure that VAS Base Software Patch CD (Audi Technical Literature item number W42 Base Software Patch) is installed in the VAS 5051 / 5052, and restart the SVM flash function test from the test plan again. If contact is necessary, attach the diagnostic log to the ticket.
- For further SVM update instructions and troubleshooting, please refer to the SVM Operating Manual; ElsaWeb TSB 2011732 .
