Recognizing Generation I and II Steering Gear

Generation I steering gear was installed at start of production (SOP) on the Audi A3 from MY 04. This was replaced in MY 2004 with steering gear (Generation II). Vehicles equipped with Generation I steering gear can be converted to Generation II.

You can identify the steering gear when it is installed by the number of bolts on the steering pinion bracket cover.

- Raise the vehicle.

- Turn steering wheel to stop on both sides in succession while noting the number of bolts - 1 -.

In Generation I steering gear, the steering pinion bracket cover is secured with -4- bolts.

In Generation II steering gear, the steering pinion bracket cover is secured with -2- bolts.
