Power Steering Gear: Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
-- Install the steering gear from the left (a second technician is needed) until the connector can be connected.
Steering Gear with Separate Connector
-- Connect the connector -1- and secure it to the steering gear using a cable tie -2-, as illustrated.
If the steering gear was replaced, then the wiring harness connector must be adapted to the steering gear.
Steering Gear with Integrated Connector
-- Connect the connector -arrow-.
Continuation for All Vehicles
-- Guide the steering gear to the right past the coolant hose which is located in the center of the engine compartment (a second technician is needed).
-- Position steering gear at plenum chamber (2nd mechanic needed).
Make sure the bolt threads and contact surfaces are free of oil and grease.
-- First install the bolts -1 and 3- by hand (a second technician is needed).
-- Then tighten the bolt -2- : 60 Nm + 90° turn.
-- Then tighten the bolt -1- : 90 Nm + 90° turn.
-- Then tighten the bolt -3- : 60 Nm + 90° turn.
-- Install the bracket -2- with the heating valves.
-- If equipped, install the dome brace -1-. Refer to TOWER BRACE .
The valve unit is flushed with coolant and can heat up to 120°.
-- Tighten the banjo bolt -2- with a bent open-end wrench, for example, Hazet 615. Note the installation position. Refer to POWER STEERING GEAR OVERVIEW .
-- Tighten the banjo bolt -1 -. Note the installation position. Refer to POWER STEERING GEAR OVERVIEW .
-- Insert the tie rod end into the wheel bearing housing as far as the stop.
Install the tie rod end by hand only into the wheel bearing housing -1-. Do not put stress on the tie rod end sealing washer -2-.
-- Install threaded connection -2- and tighten nut.
-- Install and fasten bolt -1-.
-- Remove the VAS6224 -2- from the steering gear.
Steering gear in sectional view:
1 -Screw plug: 23 Nm
2 -Remove the VAS6224
3 -Steering rack
4 -Steering gear housing
-- Seal the steering gear using the locking bolt -1-.
-- Remove the 3094 from the suction and return lines.
-- Coat the bulkhead boot contact surfaces with Universal Low-Temperature Grease.
-- Install the bulkhead boots -3- and seal -2- loosely onto the steering column.
-- Bring the steering wheel into the center position, then mount the universal joint with the bulkhead boot and seal onto the steering pinion.
-- Tighten the bolt -1- for the universal joint.
-- Mount the bulkhead boot -3- onto the drive gear and insert it into the plenum chamber bulkhead.
-- Install the seal -2- in the bulkhead boot -3-.
The markings -arrow A and arrow B- must point vertically downward.
-- Bleed the steering. Refer to STEERING, BLEEDING AFTER REPLACING .
-- Check power steering fluid level. Refer to POWER STEERING FLUID, CHECKING .
-- Check the steering for leaks. Refer to STEERING SYSTEM, CHECKING FOR LEAKS .
-- Install the trim -arrow- in the left and right wheel housings with an expansion rivet -1-.
-- Tighten the nut -2- to 2 Nm.
-- Install the cable guide in the wheel housing.
-- Install the steering gear heat shield -2-.
-- Tighten the bolt -4- and nuts -3- for the steering gear heat shield -2- to 2 Nm.
-- Install the engine cover and the coolant reservoir.
-- Install the noise insulation under the engine.
-- Install the front wheel housing liners. Refer to Removal and Installation .
-- Mount wheels and tighten. Refer to WHEEL BOLTS TIGHTENING .
-- Place vehicle on wheels. Refer to POSITIONING VEHICLE ON HOIST AND WHEELS .
-- Install the driver side storage compartment. Refer to FRONT CENTER ARMREST STORAGE COMPARTMENT .
-- Bleed the steering. Refer to STEERING, BLEEDING AFTER REPLACING .
-- Check power steering fluid level. Refer to POWER STEERING FLUID, CHECKING .
-- Check the steering for leaks. Refer to STEERING SYSTEM, CHECKING FOR LEAKS .
-- Perform an axle alignment. Refer to WHEEL ALIGNMENT .

When to See a Mechanic
