Throttle Position (TP) Sensor, Checking
Recommended special tools and equipment
- VAG1526A hand multimeter
- VAG1594A connector test kit
- VAG1598/31 test box
Both the Throttle Position (TP) sensor -G79- and the Sender -2- for accelerator pedal position - G185- are located at the accelerator pedal and communicate the driver's intentions to the ECM completely independently of each other. Both sensors are stored in one housing.
Test requirement:
- Fuses for engine electronics OK
Work procedure
- Remove driver-side storage compartment.
- Disconnect electrical harness connector -2-.
Checking voltage supply
- Switch ignition on.
- Connect multimeter for voltage measurement as follows.
Harness connector Specified value
Terminal
1 + Ground (GND) approx. 5 V
1 + 5 approx. 5 V
2 + Ground (GND) approx. 5 V
2 + 3 approx. 5 V
- Switch ignition off.
If specified values are not obtained:
Checking wire connections
- Connect test box to wiring harness of Engine Control Module (ECM); ECM is not connected. Test Box, Connecting For Wiring Test
- Check the following wire connections for open circuit according to wiring diagram:
Harness connector Test box
Terminal Socket

2 73
3 36
4 35
5 33
6 34
- Specified value: Wire resistance max 1.5 Ohm
- Also check wires for short circuit to each other, to B+ and Ground (GND).
- Specified value: infinity Ohms (no continuity)
- If necessary, repair wire connection.
If no malfunction is detected in the wiring and if the voltage supply was OK:
- Replace accelerator pedal module.
Final procedures
After repair work, the following work steps must be performed in the mentioned sequence:
1 - Check DTC memory "Mode 3: Check DTC memory". Diagnostic Mode 3: Check DTC Memory
2 - If necessary, erase DTC memory "Mode 4: Reset/erase diagnostic data". Diagnostic Mode 4: Reset/Erase Diagnostic Data
3 - Generate readiness code. Readiness Code, Generating
- End diagnosis and switch ignition off.
