Needle bearing for spur gear 2, replacing





Special tools and equipment
^ VW402 thrust plate
^ VW408A punch
^ Press sleeve for 2080A sleeve
^ Item 1 Kukko 21/4 extractor
^ Item 3 Kukko 22/1 support
^ VAG 1416 hot air blower

Removing
- Remove center differential.





- Unbolt rear output flange/driveshaft while securing output flange/driveshaft against turning.





- Pull tension nut -A- out of spur gear shaft.
- Remove bolts (arrows).
- Remove guide plate -13- and shim -C-.
- Remove securing ring for securing grooved ball bearing in center differential housing





- Attach support -A- at internal extractor -13- as shown and insert spur gear shaft -2-.
A - Support, e.g. 22/1 Kukko
B- extractor, e.g. 21/2 Kukko
- Support retainer -A- using VW402 thrust plate and pre-tension at nut 1 - of retainer.
- Pull out spur gear and carefully remove upward.
- Remove needle bearing securing ring.





Note: The upper part of the illustration shows how the puffing hooks of extractor -B must be inserted into needle bearing.

- Slide centering sleeve -2- of extractor -13- approximately 4 mm into direction of arrow in order to be able to open pulling hooks of extractor far enough.
A - Support, e.g. 22/1 Kukko
B- extractor, e.g. 21/2 Kukko





- Spread extractor -13- into upper lip of needle bearing -1- and secure extractor at nut.
- Install retainer -A- on extractor -13- as illustrated.
- Support retainer -A- using VW402 thrust plate and pre-tension at nut -3- of retainer.
- Using hot air blower, e.g. VAG 1416, quickly heat up outside of transfer housing in vicinity of needle bearing seat to approximately 80 to 100°C.

WARNING: Wear protective gloves!

- Quickly pull out needle bearing.

Installing
Installation is the reverse of removal. Also carry out the following procedure.
- Check needle bearing seat in transfer housing for damage, rework if necessary.
- Using hot air blower, e.g. VAG 1416, quickly heat up outside of transfer housing in vicinity of needle bearing seat to approximately 80 to 100°C.

WARNING: Wear protective gloves!





- Insert new needle bearing and set 2080A sleeve onto new needle bearing -1-.
2080A sleeve must be centered when set onto sleeve.
- Drive needle bearing into transfer housing up to stop using VW408A punch.
