Shift Mechanism: Removal

1996 Audi A4 Base, StandardSECTION Removal
  1. Remove shift knob and housing cover. Remove center console. Remove cover for shift mechanism housing (arrows). See Figure.
  2. Remove nuts securing shift mechanism housing (arrows). See Fig 1.

  3. Separate exhaust system behind Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC). If necessary remove front exhaust system together with Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC). Remove heat shield.
  4. NOTE: As of 06.96 the pivot rod is bolted directly to the transmission cover. The additional mounting bracket and its bolts are deleted. See item 43 in Figure. For this reason the transmission cover was revised and equipped with an additional mounting point. See Fig 2.
