A4 (1.8L Turbo AEB) (2) Engine code is stamped on left side of cylinder block, above oil filter.
A4 & A4 Avant Quattro (2.8L V6 ACK & AHA) (3)(4) Engine code is located on flat surface of cylinder block, in front of right cylinder head.
1998
A4 (1.8L Turbo AEB) (2) Engine code is stamped on left side of cylinder block, above oil filter.
A4, A4 Avant Quattro & A4 Quattro (2.8L V6 AHA) (3)(4) Engine code is located on flat surface of cylinder block, in front of right cylinder head.
1999
A4 & A4 Avant Quattro (1.8L Turbo AEB) (2) Engine code is stamped on left side of cylinder block, above oil filter.

A4, A4 Avant Quattro & A4 Quattro (2.8L V6 ATQ) (4) Engine code is located on flat surface of cylinder block, in front of right cylinder head.

(3) Identifying engine code with modified oil pump, on engine code AHA. On vehicles with VINs up to 8D-V-205 000, oil pump is mounted on front of engine, and driven directly by crankshaft. These engine can be identified by cylinder head cover "A". On vehicles with VINs from 8D-V-205 001 and on, oil pump is driven through a chain by crankshaft, and mounted inside oil pan. In addition, oil supply lines are mounted on camshaft bearing caps. These engines can be identified by cylinder head cover "B". See Fig 3.
