Air Injection Pump Relay: Testing and Inspection
1995 Audi 90 Quattro Sport V6-2.8L (AAH)SECTION Testing and Inspection
REQUIREMENTS
^ Fuel pump relay OK.
^ Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay fuse OK.
NOTE:
The secondary air injection pump relay is located in the fusel relay panel in the right front footwell, relay position -5-.
The fuse for the secondary air injection pump relay is located in fuse position -8-.
CHECKING RELAY POWER SUPPLY
- Switch ignition OFF.

- Remove lower right -A- pillar cover.
- Pull back carpet in right front footwell.

- Pull secondary air injection pump relay out of the relay panel, relay position -5-.
- Connect VAG 1527B voltage tester between terminal 2 of the relay socket and Ground (GND).
^ LED must light up
- Connect VAG 1527B voltage tester between terminal 6 of the relay socket and GND.
^ When starter is operated, LED must light up.
If LED does not light up:
- Repair corresponding open circuit in wiring using wiring diagram.
CHECKING RELAY ACTUATION
- Switch ignition ON.

- Connect VAG 1527B voltage tester between relay socket terminals 2 and 4.
^ LED must dimly light up.
- Initiate output DTM and actuate AIR pump relay -J299-. Refer to On-Board Diagnostics. MMS 311 Engine Management System
^ LED must brighten up for approximately 10 seconds, then dim again.
If LED lights up brighter after actuation (actuation OK):
- Replace secondary air injection pump relay -J299-.
If LED lights up brightly the entire time or does not light at all:
- Check wiring to relay.
CHECKING WIRING TO RELAY
- Connect VAG 1598 test box to wiring harness using adapter cable VAG 1598/11. Refer to VAG 1598 Pin Out Box Connecting. Connecting VAG 1598/31 Test Box
- The adapter harness for ECM is not connected.
If LED lights up continuously bright during relay actuation:
- Check wiring for short circuit to Ground (GND) between relay panel terminal 4 and VAG 1598 test box socket 6.

If LED does not light up during relay actuation:
- Check wiring for continuity between terminal 4 and VAG 1598 test box socket 6.
- If necessary, repair short circuit to GND or open circuit in wiring between relay panel terminal 4 and ECM connector C terminal 6.
If wiring is OK:
- Replace ECM.
